The weather is soggy but strawberries never rain on our parade. Nothing epitomises British summertime more. What is the difference between imported strawberries sold year-round and in-season British strawberries? Strawberries do not ripen after being picked and so imported strawberries, picked under-ripe so they do not turn into mush during travel, will always be a pale imitation of their British counterparts. The French regard them as an aphrodisiac, the Romans used them as a natural teeth whitener and in Britain they quite simply say, 'Hello Summer!'
